Imeem to Bring Life MySpace Music?
Beginning today, imeem will quickly cease to exist; with only select
remnants finding a new home within MySpace Music. As part of an
announcement making it's acquisition of imeem public, MySpace let
users know that imeem playlists will be temporarily disabled and
directed to MySpace Music.
Unlike
after its iLike acquisition, which saw its executives named to key
positions at MySpace, just four members of imeem's team have been hired
as consultants to help manage the transition: CEO Dalton Caldwell, CTO
Brian Berg, COO Ali Aydar and VP of Sales David Wade.
"In the coming weeks, our team will be
working as quickly as possible to take aspects of imeem that users love
and migrate them to MySpace Music," according to MySpace CEO Own Van
Natta. "We’ll start that transition today by redirecting imeem users to
MySpace Music to discover their favorite music. As quickly as
possible, we’ll be working to offer users the imeem playlists they’ve
created on MySpace Music.""
During this transition period," he
continued, "we invite all imeem users to check out MySpace Music’s
extensive catalogue of fully licensed music and video content from
major and indie artists, editorial coverage, concerts, and ticket
information.

Kevin Liles Goes Indie, Dips Out From Warner Music Group
The Warner Music Group has announced that “Executive Vice President Kevin Liles has decided to leave his day-to-day role at the company to pursue his own entrepreneurial opportunities. He will maintain a consulting relationship with the company.”
Liles is quoted:
“In the past couple weeks I’ve made one of the most important decisions of my life — to depart the Warner Music Group in order to focus more on new entrepreneurial endeavors in talent management, entertainment, media and my personal philanthropic and political passions.”
I’m sure he’ll have plenty of new business opportunities.
Here’s a bit of excerpted bio on this major figure now making independent moves:
“Kevin Liles’ ascent…began in 1991 when he undertook an unpaid internship for Def Jam in the Mid-Atlantic region. By 1993, he had become the Mid-Atlantic Marketing Manager and by 1998, after only seven years, Liles accepted the position of President of the Def Jam Music Group…”
“In addition to presiding over the label’s artist roster and day-to-day business at Def Jam, Liles oversaw the diversification of the Def Jam brand, including establishing Def Jam South, Def Soul, Def Soul Classics, Roc-A-Fella and Murder Inc. He also led the brand-extension efforts and cross-marketing deals that linked Def Jam’s name to movies, television, DVDs, clothing, financial services, mobile content and video games…”
“Following the merger that created the Island/Def Jam Music Group in 2002, Liles added the title of Executive Vice President of Island Def Jam Music Group to his resume…By 2004, Liles joined Warner Music Group as Executive Vice President and was part of the senior executive team when the company went public in 2005. As the lead executive behind the implementation of WMG’s new 360-degree strategy for enhanced artist partnerships, Liles oversaw the expansion of the traditional record company role in the artist’s career…”
“Throughout 2008, Liles was instrumental in assembling a coalition of like-minded entertainers who made strategic visits to swing states in the final weeks before the historic Presidential election…Liles serves as board member/advisor to Ogilvy & Mather Diversity Board, Harbor Bank, Healthcorps, SEED School of Maryland, New Yorkers For Children, Junior Achievement of New York and is a member of The Executive Leadership Council.”
“He is the bestselling author of “Make It Happen: the Hip Hop Guide to Success” and oversees both Kevin Liles for a Better Baltimore, which invests in the Baltimore community, and the Make It Happen Foundation, which empowers African-American youth to succeed in the business world.”

Oprah and Jay Z Sneak Peek
Oprah: So tell me how you got into the drug dealing.Jay-Z: It was natural.…
Oprah: Because drug dealers were your role models. There wasn’t a teacher or a lawyer or a nurse or a doctor or an accountant in the neighborhood?
Jay-Z: Well, we were living in Marcy by then, so, no. And if anyone did become something like that, they moved out. They never came back to share the wisdom of how they made it. If anyone made it, you never knew it. That’s why I’ve always said that if I became successful, I’d come back here, grab somebody, and show him how it can be done.
Oprah: So by the time you were 13, this was a way of life. Did the lifestyle frighten you?
Jay-Z: No. It was normal. And at some point, you become addicted to the feeling. The uncertainty and adrenaline and danger of that lifestyle.
Oprah: This is where we differ. This is where we differ. Because I’d be very scared! Weren’t you shot at three times—within six feet—and you lived to talk about it?
Jay-Z: That was divine intervention. Divine intervention, and nobody knowing how to shoot.
Oprah: What happened in each situation?
Jay-Z: It was one situation, three shots.
Oprah: So he was a bad shot.
Oprah: Many of the little boys who grew up in the Marcy projects are either in jail or dead. Why do you think you got to grow up and buy your mom a house?
Jay-Z: There’s the gift, there’s the spirit, and there’s the work—all three have to come together. If one of those things is off, it can stop you from becoming who you were meant to be.
Oprah: When I met you a few years ago, we discussed our disagreement over the use of the N word and misogynist lyrics in rap music. Do you believe that using the N word is necessary?
Jay-Z: Nothing is necessary. It’s just become part of the way we communicate. My generation hasn’t had the same experience with that word that generations of people before us had. We weren’t so close to the pain. So in our way, we disarmed the word. We took the fire pin out of the grenade.
Oprah: Do you and Beyoncé have a pact that you just won’t talk about each other?
Jay-Z: Yeah. When you’re a public person, you have to keep some things to yourself, or else people will just—
Oprah: Eat it up. I know. But can I ask how in the world you kept your wedding a secret?
Jay-Z: Late planning!
Oprah: How many people knew?
Jay-Z: Very few. The sad part is that we offended some. But people who love you understand. Because at the end of the day, it’s your day.
Oprah: So here we are, talking on a Sunday afternoon. If you weren’t sitting here with me, what would you be doing?
Jay-Z: I’m gonna get killed for this, but I’ll tell you anyway. There’s a great pizza spot we go to every Sunday. It’s our tradition. It’s a small place in Brooklyn, you can bring your own wine, and there are candles there. It’s a nice date.

Recording Your Indie Album: a Pre-Production Checklist
Pre production is everything that you should be taking care of prior to the first time you actually record something in the studio. This includes song selection, arrangement ideas, voice lessons, scheduling session musicians, finding a recording studio/engineer and even starting the process of finding a graphic artist for the CD artwork as well as a duplication house to mass produce your finished master. This can be a daunting amount of work especially if you’re new to the game, however there is someone you can turn to who can help make this process much more effective and significantly simpler. Music Labels Reach Online Royalty Deal
Many of the music sites had argued that the old rates were so high that they were being forced out of business. That could have come back to haunt the record labels, since for many people the sites are becoming a useful way to discover music.
“This is definitely the agreement that we’ve been waiting for,” said Tim Westergren, the founder of Pandora, one of the most popular Internet radio sites with 30 million registered users.
In 2007 a federal royalty board ruled that all so-called webcasters needed to pay a fee, set to increase to 0.19 cent a song next year, each time they streamed a song for a listener

Michael Jackson's Posthumous Sales Surge

By Gil Kaufman
Singer currently holds eight of top 10 slots on iTunes singles chart.
From Cairo to Compton, Harlem to Hanoi, last week, fans of the King of Pop were celebrating the life of Michael Jackson by listening and dancing to the iconic singer's music. They were also rushing out to buy as much of it as they could, creating a retail crush around the country (and the world) that will likely land a number of Jackson albums at the top of the Billboard catalog charts next week.

Is Kanye really too good for Twitter?

Lame trend alert: celebrities claiming they’ve got better things to be doing than to be on the Internets.
As is the case with most trends, Kool Keith was up on this a good 10 years before it was all trendy. On one of those god-awful albums he put out back in the late ’90s/early ’00s, he rapped, “I’m not sitting behind no computer - I’m going to Bermuda!” And that was back when there was hardly shit to do on the Internets. Not to sound like someone’s grandpa, but back in those days, you had to stroke it to tiny thumbnail images of naked women. Because it cost like $20 to view the full size version. And who had $20 back in 1999? If I did, I probably would have drunk myself to death.
But I don’t want to let you guys in on more than you need to know about me…
